Toad Detour 2010
Volunteer Orientation Handout
Thank you for your interest in helping toads! We had a successful migration last year, saving over 700 toads from oncoming traffic. With your help, we can save even more this spring. We’ve made some changes to our procedure. This year, we will set-up the detour every night during the migration and sign volunteers up for shifts in advance. We will continue to email all volunteers for extra help on the main migration night. Please review the following guidelines so that we can improve our success rate this season.
Procedures
Dates: Toad Migration, March 26th-April 16th; Toadlet migration June 7th-25th (approx.)
Times: 7-9pm requested, but can stay later
Detour Locations: Cathedral Village to Ridge, Shawmont to Ridge
Volunteer Parking: Park on Ridge or near ball field at Hagy’s Mill & Port Royal
Supply Storage: SCEE barn or Rented Storage Unit at Hagy’s Mill & Port Royal
Volunteer Jobs
Nightly Volunteers: 5-10 volunteers/night set up barricades, toad spot/count, open/close barricades for neighbor/church cars, call our “callers” on main migration night.
Callers: When called, call numbers on call sheet including Lisa Levinson, emergency numbers, media contacts, other volunteers (by location, closest first).
Community Relations
Always be polite and courteous, especially to neighbors!
Explain why we are detouring traffic in a pleasant, calm tone and distribute brochures.
When requested, move barricades promptly and open wide enough to let cars pass easily.
If disagreements occur, ask other volunteers for assistance and call Lisa (215-620-2130).
Volunteer Shifts
See Volunteer Shifts Sign-Up Sheet or sign up for your shift online. (Instructions will be emailed soon!)
